Amy Howard and James Byrnes met as freshman at the University of St. Thomas. They shared a lab table and connected over (failed) science experiments, but when the semester ended, they went their separate ways. As juniors, their schedules and social lives overlapped once again, and by the last exam that semester they decided, over a couple of Grain Belts, that maybe they should give this relationship experiment a try. After graduating from St. Thomas, they both moved to Chapel Hill to attend separate Ph.D. programs at the University of North Carolina. Though their current home is in North Carolina, they wanted their wedding to be in Minnesota near family and friends. They chose the Mill City Museum because it offered a mix of history and rustic charm. In a nod to their love for science, Amy grew succulents in test beakers in her Chapel Hill lab and James drove them back to Minnesota, where they handed them out to guests as wedding favors. “It was nice to go back to where we all started, back to the Twin Cities,” says Amy.
