Barbie Broten and Zach Lundstrom’s love story is one of classic Minnesota moments, starting when they were high school seniors sharing a bag of kettle corn at the county fair. Zach’s proposal even took place during that most Minnesotan of traditions: a family-and-friends fishing trip. Fishing off the dock at sunset, Barbie was releasing her catch when she turned and saw Zach on one knee, proposing with her grandmother’s ring. The wedding day was all about family and friends. “We are very social people and love to be surrounded by our loved ones,” Barbie says. “That's why Zach had 16 groomsmen and I had nine bridesmaids.” Her tip? “Don’t be afraid to do what you want on your wedding day—even if it is having a huge bridal party!” Avid outdoors enthusiasts, Barbie and Zach hosted their special day at Pike Bay Lodge on Lake Vermilion, the scene of many happy childhood memories for each. Barbie’s grandmother, who passed away a few months before their nuptials, was present in spirit: Her frequent quip, “Go jump in the lake!” was emblazoned on a marquee at the wedding. From exchanging vows at the lake to sharing their first dance and watching the day slip into a starry night, Barbie says, “the entire day was a dream ... truly magical.”
