Choosing a venue is one of the most important decisions to be made when bringing a wedding together. The location of your celebration largely determines the overall atmosphere and feel that you and your guests will remember for years to come. A venue, particularly when defined by having a show stopping view, can act as the ultimate piece of décor and serve as the inspiration for the rest of your wedding’s design.
There is an art to perfectly highlighting a picturesque locale, and we’ve consulted with the experts on not only the best venues but tricks to make them look straight out of your dreams.
TO A TEE
Consider saying “I do” on the links. “Bearpath Golf and Country Club is the perfect spot to have a wedding with a view!” say Kim Davis and Katie Easthouse, catering and events directors at Bearpath Golf and Country Club. “Your vows can be exchanged underneath a picturesque white pergola surrounded by lush flowers and gardens. This pergola is nestled in a large courtyard with breathtaking views of our Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. Trees enclose the patio, ensuring privacy during the intimate and emotional ceremony. This spacious ballroom boasts sweeping windows that provide spectacular views. Picking a venue that has an outdoor space you fall in love with, is versatile and is able to be an extension of your inside space is key.”
LET NATURE SHINE THROUGH
“Outdoor weddings make for spectacular ceremonies,” says Cheron Rubenstein, senior catering sales manager at Braemar Golf Course for Lancer Catering. “There are so many wonderful ways to capture the feel of your special day and show who you are as a couple, based on where you pick for a location. My biggest advice is to make sure your background is stunning, but not distracting. You don't need to overdo it on decor and extras when you have an incredible landscaped backdrop.”
SPECIFY YOUR SEARCH
“During your venue search, try using those keywords such as vineyard, outside or any other words that capture the specific atmosphere you’re looking for,” says Cynsthia Strauser, events manager at Chankaska Wines. “At Chankaska, we offer many views that are unique to our space. Choose your favorite photo op spots to get that picture perfect moment beneath our oak tree, encompassed in our trees or under the sunset in our vines.”
THE VAN DUSEN MANSION
"The Van Dusen Mansion courtyard is a hidden gem in the heart of Minneapolis. Covered in green vines in the summer, crunchy colorful leaves in the fall and sparkly snow in the winter, it's the perfect backdrop for photos, your ceremony and cocktail hour,” says Moriah Block, content manager at The Van Dusen Mansion.
KEEP TRANSPORTATION CONCERNS IN MIND
“In reality sometimes that family farm or deeply wooded property allows for an amazing backdrop, but can quickly become a logistical nightmare when considering guest parking accommodations,” says Cortney Voigt-Ely, sales specialist at Voigt’s Bus. “Where will they park? Is there enough parking? Does the property have enough lighting? Is there enough space for a shuttle bus to maneuver?”
“Within coordinating the logistics, we would bring members of our management and/or safety team to look over the property. We’d offer suggestions on which vehicle type is best suited for your big day, along with suggestions for property improvements for safe and efficient service. Our sales team will also work with you to coordinate a timely and realistic transportation schedule. Take the guesswork out of guest transportation logistics, and allow us to assist you in capturing the highest level of transportation services,” Cortney says.
WATERSIDE
A wedding along the coast brings a refreshingly cool touch to your ceremony and reception. A breeze coming off the lake and the rich blue backdrop make for an inimitable atmosphere. “Minnesota is known for its lakes, and it is the perfect backdrop for a wedding,” says Sarah Trotter, owner of Lasting Impressions Weddings. With ample venues to choose from, there is no shortage of waterfront wedding venues to call your own come your big day.
BAVARIA DOWNS
"Bavaria Downs is a stunning European estate that sits on rolling acres in Chaska. The outdoor ceremony location overlooks a peaceful pond and array of trees. Bavaria Downs is the perfect getaway and feels like a destination wedding venue - right in your backyard!” says Moriah Block, content manager at Bavaria Downs.
URBAN JUNGLE
“What better backdrop for your wedding ceremony than the glittering skyline of Minneapolis?” says Naomi Thompson, director of lifestyle at the Hewing Hotel. “Just as stunning in the daytime as it is in the evening hours, our rooftop has one of the most unique and breathtaking views of the city. Our rooftop also features a cozy and chic indoor space for your wedding party and family gathering. It’s the perfect combination of thrilling and intimate all at the same time. There’s truly nothing else like it in the Twin Cities!”
"The rooftop of A'BULAE has a stunning view of St. Paul. The Capital is the backdrop for our outdoor ceremonies, and we seem to always get lucky with a beautiful sunset. At night, enjoy the view of the twinkly lights of traffic, and CHS field,” says Moriah Block, content manager at A’BULAE.
TAKE IT TO THE PARK
“The secret to stunning views on your wedding day? Parks,” says Quinn Mavets, bridal consultant at Angelique’s Bridal. “National Parks are known for the gorgeous landscapes, but even City Parks can offer beautiful natural backdrops for your upcoming summer wedding."
“For some things, it’s not about the journey – it’s about the destination. In 2021, micro-weddings and elopements will continue to increase in popularity. Even city parks can offer stunning backdrops for your wedding pictures,” Quinn says.
