Shoppers must visit the store to enter the gift card giveaway, but no purchase is necessary to enter.

About Creating Max’s: Growing Up in the Business and Forging Her Own Path

Max’s owner Ellen Hertz opened her shop on May 22, 2006 after a 20-year career in consulting management and IT, and ultimately as a partner at Accenture. Her work entailed weekly travel to cities throughout the U.S. where she always found unique items created by artists whose work was not found in the Twin Cities. As the granddaughter of a successful Detroit-area jewelry store owner, Hertz grew up in the business, catching the entrepreneurial bug from her grandfather Max Rosenbaum who owned and operated Max’s Jewelry Company in Hamtramck, Michigan for 54 years. During her years as a consultant, Hertz dreamed of one day opening her own business.

Hertz knew her business would be a shop where customers could find beautiful handcrafted fine jewelry by artists whose work was not found elsewhere in the Twin Cities. As a connoisseur of gourmet chocolate and exquisite home décor accessories, she also envisioned the shop carrying confections and decorative objects. On May 22, 2006,

Hertz’s longtime dream was realized with the opening of Max’s, a boutique stocked with exquisite jewelry, chocolate, and home décor accents evocative of her passion for style and quality. The shop was one of the first retailers to open at the “Excelsior & Grand” retail, restaurant, and residential complex in St. Louis Park. Hertz’s first location was across the street from the present spot in a smaller space that was part of where the CVS store now sits, and in 2011 she moved to the current location at 3826 Grand Way.

“We are able to celebrate this milestone because of our customers whose support – especially this past year – means everything to us,” said Hertz. Max’s carries the collections of more than 70 jewelry artists, 24 chocolatiers, and nearly 20 home and gift artisans, as well as an array of artful, sometimes irreverent cards and paper goods. The shop has received numerous community and industry awards.
