Coordinating bridesmaids' dresses

Q. I’ve decided to forgo cookie-cutter bridesmaid’s dresses and let my bridal party pick their own styles to suit their tastes and shapes. In giving up the control on this, how can I ensure that their dresses will all coordinate even if they don’t match?

A. There are a number of different ways to make sure your bridesmaids look like members of a wedding party and not just guests at the wedding. If you’re completely open and trust their taste, just give your bridesmaids a color, preferably with a swatch, and let them choose the fabric and style. Another option—very simple for you and your bridal party—is to pick one designer’s line; that way you can select the exact color and fabric while your bridesmaids can switch the neckline or hem length. “Another trend we’re seeing a lot of is to do two complementary colors within the bridal party, in which case the ladies might all wear the same style of dress but in different colors,” advises Flutter Boutique owner Michelle Hanson. “Or choose all different shades of a color. This way, the ladies can still coordinate.” As a rule of thumb, if you’re not sure about letting them choose on their own, go shopping with them.
