Lucillia and Sam met in New York seven years ago, and their relationship survived socially distanced dates and a move to the Midwest where the pair fell as hard for the Twin Cities as they did for each other. They had a strong vision for their wedding day, including the garden party formal dress code to the eye-catching jewel-toned palette, the couple aimed for an ambiance that reflected their eclectic taste. Lucillia wore a fashion-forward lace corset and pantset with a matching scarf, carrying vibrant, undyed florals in her bouquet that complemented Sam’s equally stylish emerald suit.
“We set out to include our shared love of music and combine wedding traditions from very different cultures in a way that felt real to who we are as a couple,” the newlyweds reflect on meshing their Congolese and Jewish heritage. Under a bright chuppah adorned with a hand-sewn liputa fabric from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the pair received traditional Jewish blessings personalized to their relationship. Sam shared his vows in English, French and Kikongo to directly address and thank Lucillia’s family for welcoming him as her husband.
Color infused every corner of the reception, with whimsical tablecloths, textured taper candles and custom-made signage, setting the scene for traditional Congolese dancing. Appreciative that their day allowed them to enjoy the moment, Lucillia and Sam offered this advice, “lean into the dynamics of your relationship and allow that to set the tone.” —Ryley S.
