Geometric Wedding Cakes
Squares and circles and lines, oh my! Geometric shapes add a graphic dimension to any wedding cake.

{1} Janan Juliff—known in the kitchen as The Cake Diva—jumped on the macaron trend to bake this elegant combination of cake and cookies. Exactly 200 cookies, made with multi-colored French meringue batter, encircle three tiers of cake. Continue the sweet-treat theme by sending your guests home with an individual batch of macarons.

{2} Throughout the cake design process, April Wysocki and her team of bakers at Country Cake Cupboard and Café keep one theme in mind: simple but elegant. A playful scattering of circles embellishes the front of this cake, while subtle square cutouts anchor each tier. Though a warm-weather wedding begs for a light batter flavor, such as Country Cake Cupboard’s apricot purée lemon cake or a whipped cream base with strawberries, their most popular flavors are delicious no matter the season. “Fudge chocolate and white almond are the two cakes we can’t sell enough of,” Wysocki says.

{3} Nothing shouts “spring” more than fresh flowers, like the gerbera daisies placed on this cake. A Piece of Cake’s Mary Zahasky turned to her business partner, Doug Boisvery of MBZ Design and Event Studio, to provide the flowers, as she topped the buttercream frosting with rolled fondant cutouts. While deciding on a flavor (tough job, we know), be sure to taste-test their lemon or raspberry soufflé options.

Not only can your ’maids and bouquets be pretty in pink, but your cake can too—especially since Queen of Cakes is developing a pink champagne flavor. “Sugarpaste specialist” Patty Leckband created the detailed flower and will hit the books to replicate your favorite type of bloom: She’ll research it at flower shops, take it apart petal by petal and even cut paper patterns. Fill a colorful creation with a berry mousse such as strawberry, raspberry or triple berry.

{5} This sprightly design, another construction by Terri Leckas and the Queen of Cakes crew, features an unexpected favorite in their kitchen—orange. While visiting Queen of Cakes’ design studio, cakes are displayed in a 360-degree view, allowing you a realistic vision of what a cake could look like on your big day. Think you’ll need a boost of sugar after all that dancing? Leckas also offers after-party treats, from mini éclairs to dessert triangles.

{6} If you love Turtle Bread Company’s deli and dining room, you’ll likely love their desserts too. With locations in downtown Minneapolis, Linden Hills, the Longfellow neighborhood and South Minneapolis, Turtle Bread is a hot spot for soups, salads and artisan bread—but don’t forget that they also create delectable desserts. This three-tier cake can provide a pop of color to any reception, which guests will remember the next time they’re roaming Minneapolis’s streets on an empty stomach.
