Kate & Fred

Nov. 21, 2009 at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis

Kate Myers and Fred Smith first met to elevator music. Not the typical kind, though—they were both attending Luther College, and Kate and Fred were in an elevator; Kate was humming a song by one of Fred’s favorite bands, Motion City Soundtrack, so he struck up a conversation. They worked together at the college newspaper, dated, and saw the band together more than a dozen times; Fred proposed on Christmas Eve, 2008, when he presented her with a photo album of their relationship, with a last image of his hand holding the engagement ring. Their wedding soon took on the theme of “a little bit of vintage glam and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll.” Kate’s bachelorette party was a ’50s housewife soirée with vintage costumes and cocktails, and cupcakes with names like “June Cleaver” and “Betty Crocker.” The couple’s soundtrack continued with their reception at the Varsity Theater, a favorite music venue. Kate even had her Monique Lhullier gown transformed into a cocktail dress for the reception so she could dance up a storm. Meanwhile, the men in the party couldn’t complain about dancing in dress shoes, since they all sported Converse All-Stars.
