Catherine & John

Aug. 28, 2010 at Lynnhurst Congregational Church in Minneapolis

Catherine Strutt is a decisive woman. At just 15 years old, after meeting John Patterson, she called her mother and declared, “I just met the boy I am going to marry.” John was attending an all-boys’ boarding school in Connecticut for a prep year before starting at the US Naval Academy; Catherine went to the all-girls’ school across town. Over the next decade, even though they were separated by states and sometimes oceans, the pair became best friends and eventually a couple. Last Thanksgiving, the pair met in San Diego—halfway between their locations of Hawaii and Chicago. At the end of the weekend, Catherine flew back to Chicago, thinking John was going back to Hawaii. Not the case. Instead, he flew to Miami, had dinner with Catherine’s parents and then showed up at her door with a ring and Christmas tree. The following summer, the Patterson home hosted their black-tie garden party wedding reception, inspired by the movie Sabrina. Friends and family mingled late into the night, with the help of a gourmet coffee bar and dancing to several bands until the light of glowing lanterns.
